There was an interesting question brought up today about how does someone who is a publisher and an author juggle those two jobs. Because really, they both are full time jobs. Being a writer comes with a certain set of responsibilities. There are books to be written, revised, edited, submitted, and then promoted. There’s contacts, networking, blogging, and everything that goes along with selling the books. And there is the fact that with any job there is a constant need for learning and growth. Becoming stagnant isn’t good no matter what your occupation.

And, on the publisher side there is, of course, the financial aspects of having a business. Discovering trends, figuring out cash flow, balance sheets, tracking sales, which way are they going, figuring out all that data…I could go on for a while. :) There’s also networking, learning, recruiting, editorial work, author development, again, the list could go on and on. And while there’s some times the two jobs cross, for example, I can write a reply to a question with my “author” hat and my “publisher” hat on at the same time, really it’s a whole separate work flow.

So what’s the author/publisher to do?

When, where, and how to promote is one of the biggest issues authors face. Whether the author is newly published or an experienced veteran, adjusting the promotional efforts used is a never ending battle. It makes sense that many authors turn to loops. These chat lists created by authors, review sites, publishers, and fans can garner a lot of members, and in turn, provide a lot of exposure.

However there are many rules and guidelines for promoting on these chat loops and the penalty for violating them can result in moderation, banning, and a bad reputation. Amongst themselves, authors and readers discuss the individuals who repeatedly break the rules as spammers, drive-by promo, and other derogatory name. Mention “loop spammers” and many of us can think of one, or a lot, of names.

So, how do you know you’re doing it right? And what can authors do to protect their reputation?
