Do you ever check yourself? In what you say, what you do, and what you write? Do you stop and say, “Here’s a line I must not cross”? Or do you spew your thoughts and ideas out loud and on paper and in blog posts across the web without a thought for how they will be perceived by others?

This is an electronic world we live in and as much as things are so very easy now because of technology, it is also a very harsh and unforgiving frontier on some fronts. What you put out there in the electronic world can and will, and often does, come back to bite you on your pretty little ass.

Have you ever heard of the Wayback Machine? I can use it and dig up cached copies of websites I built more than 10 years ago. I cringe when I see them because my work is more refined and prettier now. And even though those sites are no longer up, they are still out there for people to find, if you know how to dig.

When you post to your blog, how many people are going to see it and remember your words? Dooce is a blogger who became famous for losing her job because of what she said on her blog. My own pal Karl had the same thing happen to him. I even have a post on my blog about “How I Almost Got Karled” which is about how I got “talked to” at work because of frustrations I’d unloaded on my personal blog.

Yahoo groups and blogs are places you can call your own, but you have to ask yourself how much access do people have to those things? How much of yourself are you giving away to others in a thoughtless, careless manner? Are you giving a stalker the means to find your house or your place of employment? Are you giving readers a bad view of yourself as an author when you whine constantly on your blog or public group about your bad editors, stupid publishers, and the antics of other authors who are behaving in a less than professional manner? And what about when you blatantly do things on groups that are against the rules? Don’t those things reflect poorly on you as well? Read more »

Hi, folks. I’m talking to Eric today. He’s one of the main players in my latest book out at Pink Petal called Goodbye Scrooge. I’m here to get his take on how he expects the story between him and Marcus to go.

So, Eric, let’s start with a little bit about you, shall we?
Eric: “I play basket ball, and yes, our team has won a lot of games this season, and everyone seems to think it’s because of me, but I beg to differ. Basket ball isn’t a solo game, and I don’t win every point. Take Marcus Guthrie as an example. Now, I won’t say I don’t have hopes of getting the guy, but honestly, how much more obvious do I have to be?”

Aside: I’m surprised at his agitation. I had him pegged for a much calmer guy. Someone who knows what he wants and is used to getting it.

Eric:
“I know. I know. The rumours about him and prof Martin have been going around for years. But rumours about prof Martin are everywhere. Sometimes I wonder if Marcus knows how many students that jerk sleeps with. That sounds harsh, doesn’t it? Doesn’t matter. I’ll get him.”

Finally, Eric sits back, relaxing into the comfy, coffee house chair to gaze around the room. He’s handsome. Blue eyed, blond, and tall, obviously. He is a basketball player, after all, and I can’t see why any guy he wanted wouldn’t be at his beck and call. He turns to me as I’m about to ask him a question and cuts me off.

Eric:
“You’re the boss. You can make it come out right.”

I nod, discomfited. My stories always come out right, but I can see in his clear baby blues he doesn’t think my idea of ‘right’ and his are going to be the same thing. I decide to change the subject, turn the conversation away from Marcus Guthrie.

Me:
So, Eric, I understand Angel mentioned his cousin, Dwayne is coming from L.A. to tay with his family for the duration of the semester

Eric:
stares at me, something like shock in his gaze.”Dwayne.” He says. “I guess.” He dismisses the thought with a wave of his hand. “Dwayne’s a hoodlum. Totally not my type.”

And this, folks, is where a story comes from; a character tosses out a challenge, and I am not one to back down. So while I go back to the writer’s cave and figure out how to open Eric’s eyes to the beauty found in a bit of bad boy booty, feel free to read about his adventures with Marcus and discover teh truth behind these aleged rumours dealing with professor Julian Tredwell.Goodbye Scrooge Cover

Amid the sounds of boisterous children and the noise from carts and pedestrians on the street outside, Ahn (Lukos’ friend) sat down with Lise to interview her about Lukos and about their romance.

Ahn: For so long you were our ruling Princess, it’s hard to think of you as anything except. How are you doing since your sister’s decree exiling you from the royal family?

Lise: (sigh) I wish we could reconcile. I’m not proud of the things we did, though they were meant to force Riley’s hand and make him a legitimate ruler for Caroann. (sighs again) I don’t miss being a princess. I suppose I should, but I have Lukos, and my design business in the human realm. My sister is doing a lovely job ruling Caroann, and I couldn’t be happier for her.

Ahn: Speaking of Lukos, how hard was it to keep your feelings a secret?

Lise: It was tough, but we both knew what we had to do. I’ve known Lukos wasn’t my brother from the night my parents brought him home. Shortly thereafter, he was sent away as all young noble fae males are to learn the arts of war and rulership. When he returned, he was an adult. We maybe spent a day together, if that, when we were younger, and since I knew about his common parents, there was always the distance between us. When he came home, it was like he was a stranger. And it wasn’t until then, when he came home and started taking over the duties of ruling that my affections grew. My mother quickly saw what was growing between us, and worked with us to fake their removal as the rulers of Caroann. We were always meant to be temporary rulers, stepping out of the way once my sister found her mate. We presented the face we had to in public and did what we had to do for Caroann.

Ahn: It’s been revealed that Lukos came from one of the common castes. How is he doing with the revelation?

Lise: (smiles softly) I think it’s been easier on him than on me. I keep wanting to shield him from the nasty courtiers and the gossip that I know must be happening. But he has his business in the human realms, and is quite happy to return to his craftsman heritage. I love him. His being common doesn’t affect me, but I know how vicious those in power can be, so I try to protect him. That’s why we stay in the human realms so often.

Ahn: And is it true? Is he going to be a father?

Lise: (Nods) It’s true, and we both couldn’t be happier.

Ahn: We’re happy for you too. Thanks for this time to chat.

When beautiful, perfect basketball hero Eric hits on grad student Marcus, it’s more than just another flirtation. Sure he’s ready to move on, he plans to give Julian one last Christmas gift; an unforgettable night, before he leaves.

He never expected to be the person who can’t get the passion they find on that last go round out of his head. His decision isn’t going to be as simple as he’d hoped. Maybe perfect isn’t everything after all.
EXCERPT:

The professor let the door close behind us as he entered, tossed his briefcase, then himself onto the couch in front of the tall, narrow window. Young and handsome, he shouldn’t have fit into that lonely space so well. But he did.

“Watch your mouth Marcus, please.”

“Or what?”

He heaved a sigh and dropped his head onto the couch back. “What ever happened to respect for your elders?”

I snorted. “You’re kidding, right?”

He didn’t even bother to look up.

The tiny office, overcrowded by the big desk, turned stuffy with disapproval. My already pissy mood shifted toward really bad, and I reached for my coffee. The window in the corner, floor to ceiling and about eight inches wide, did little to illuminate the dim interior. Treadwell flicked on the lamp beside the couch. Its yellow light washed out the weak morning sun and accentuated the room’s empty feeling that went way beyond uncluttered. The man never let a single paperclip escape his orderly compulsions. Some days I had an overwhelming urge to push in every other book on his shelf just to see him turn that special shade of pink that meant he was feeling something.

I adjusted my position until what little sunlight there was didn’t fall across my face and I could see him, rather than just a man-shaped blob.

“This is about the car wash, isn’t it?” I asked when he remained silent. “You’ve been micro-managing it since the basketball team decided to help.”

“Just doing my job, Marcus.”

“Right. Since when have you cared? The students have run this every year and you never saw the need to oversee any of it before.” I didn’t know why I cared that he wanted to participate in the annual fundraiser this year. At least, I pretended I didn’t know.

“You never had that gang of basketball playing oafs participating before, either.”

“Ahhh.” I took the lid off my coffee and grinned at him through the steam. “So that’s it. It’s not about supervision. It’s about ogling the young hunks. Someone is going to call you on that one day, you know.”

Although Professor Julian Treadwell was tenured and somewhat influential in the Anthropology department, he was young, only in his mid-thirties, which put him less than a decade older than me and younger than a few of his other, more mature students. He’d never made a secret of his preference for men. I would have been surprised at his quick rise to the kind of secure position he had if not for the private nature of the college and the fact people, students and professors alike, only got in if those in charge wanted them in. I was fairly certain his teaching skills, which were impressive, and his CV, also nothing to be sneered at, were not the only skills that had landed him his job. Rumors in a school this size had everyone in bed with everyone else, at some time or another, which actually made it easier to do it, if that was your inclination. No one would ever know for certain what was true and what wasn’t. If nothing else, it had made for an entertaining college career.

Treadwell lifted an eyebrow at me now and the expression made me want to snicker as it climbed up under his blond bangs. Then the morning sun caught a sliver of amber from his eyes, making them flash and the snicker died before it was born.

He held out a hand.

I passed him the coffee I’d been about to sip.

He took his time blowing delicately over the top. “You have a good rapport with your own Benevolent Association members, Marcus, but I doubt you know what you’re getting into with the basketball team. I would hate to see you gaff up your last year here by losing control of this.” He glanced up, eyes flashing viciously through his lashes. “Heaven forbid you should have to take your Masters here because something so simple as a school fundraiser got out of hand while you were in charge. Bigger universities don’t necessarily feel the need to go out of their way for screw ups. As your faculty advisor, I have to be there. For your own good.” He sipped his coffee, the picture of serenity while I fumed.

For Lise, seeing Lukos again means her dreams can come true. Except, how can she find her fairytale ending, when she’s been the wicked sister, and her Prince thinks nobility matters to the former fairy princess?
EXCERPT:

Lise closed her eyes and drew a deep breath, redolent with the smells of humanity. Car exhaust, factory pollution, too many people, and a bit too much alcohol combined in her nose to make her stomach churn. Or the trembling in her gut could be because she’d had a message the last time she’d visited Sparkle and Moondust. The one she sought would be here tonight.

Lukos.

Her heart sang to think of him so close, just beyond the thick, concrete walls. The bar, Sparkle and Moondust, contained a portal to the fae realms inside. Mostly fae frequented it, well and those humans who wanted to play amongst the creatures of her realm. The name was an in-joke amongst the fae, that most of the humans thought they were creatures of fairy dust and moonlight. The building, an old factory, stood in a not-that-nice part of town, though that didn’t matter to most of the patrons. Her thoughts went to only one other. Would he welcome her? Would he run away again? Well, there was only one way to find out.

She stepped forward, wobbling a little on the impossibly high heels she wore. Her halter top and short skirt bared so much more skin than she was used to, but when in Rome, or in this case Sparkle and Moondust… She plastered one of the soft, royal smiles she so often gave, the one that said “I’m a princess and I know it” on her face and strolled into the bar. This time of night, the crowd was sparse, but she only had eyes for one fae man.

Lukos sat at the bar with his back to her. He, too, wore mortal clothes, black jeans and a black T-shirt that made his pale skin look even more so. His white-blond hair had been cropped short, nearly shorn, so his pointed ears stood out prominently. Lise admired the breadth of his shoulders, the way his torso tapered to his trim waist, and the fit, tight muscles of his ass modeled so lovingly by the worn denim. Black snakeskin boots with silver accents covered his feet, and she’d never seen a sexier looking fae. A pink bag, incongruous with his badass-biker look, sat by his feet.

Her pulse fluttered. She breathed deeply. With the bar’s doors closed, she caught the faintest hint of Lukos’ deep woods aroma. Behind the bar, Menelik nodded to her. She smiled back. He’d been the one to set up this meeting, and discreetly, he moved to the other end of the bar to clean its spotless surface.

Lise glided forward. Her heels clicked against the floor. Men’s gazes turned to watch her passage, but not Lukos. He sat, his back ramrod straight, and stared into the tumbler full of amber liquid he held.

She’d rehearsed how to approach him a thousand times since coming to the mortal realms. Be sultry and entice him back to her bed. Or maybe just telling him straightforwardly that she knew the truth about his parentage and it didn’t matter to her. It hadn’t back in Caroann, the fae realms, when she’d taken him to her bed, or when they ran political circles around the betrothal offers for both of them, never once revealing that they were lovers. She knew the entire truth and she loved him just the same.

Her courage fled the closer she got to him. She slid onto the empty barstool next to him.

Menelik straightened and went to her. “What will you have, beautiful?”

Next to her, Lukos stiffened.

“The usual,” she replied.

“Coming right up.” Menelik moved behind the bar with an easy familiarity of a good bartender. He placed her drink on a napkin, even added a cherry on a little plastic sword the way she liked.

Lise reached for her purse.

“It’s on the house, enjoy.” He winked at her and returned to his place at the other end of the bar.

“What’s the usual?” Lukos asked.

The first brush of his voice against her ears was like a match to tinder. Heat, never quite banked, flooded her body, making her nipples harden behind the flimsy material of her halter top. She pressed her thighs together. The pure sensual effect of his voice caught her unawares, and she took a sip of her drink in the hopes it would calm her nerves.

“A fairyland special,” she replied.

Lukos arched one finely sculpted brow. “I think I have one of those for you.” Lukos drowned the last of his drink in a single gulp. If the liquor burned all the way down, he didn’t show any signs. Reaching between them, he picked up the bag from the floor. “I believe you ordered these.”

Lise gasped. She’d nearly forgotten about the order placed on the Spellbound Treasure website. The small tag containing a crest and the initials ST announced he’d brought her package. Her cheeks heated, and she cursed her pale complexion. Of all the people to know she’d bought those. Maybe he hadn’t looked inside. Maybe he didn’t know what he held. She licked her lips and took the bag from him. “Thank you,” she said, setting the bag on the bar and taking the stool next to him. She rested her left hand against his thigh. “I’ve looked for you a long time, Lukos. I’m glad I found you.”

The facade of being the sibling rulers of the fairy realm, Caroann, crumbled long before Princess Lise had threaten to come between the true rulers of Caroann. A twitter conversation led to the revelation that for a NY publisher, the cost of ARCs run in the $6-7 range. As a small press publisher, I looked at that and did the emoticon of o.O. Granted, there is something to be said for the efficiencies of the smaller scale. If I am publisher, editor, formatter, and file uploader, then I can do things all at once as opposed to shuffling files from one department to another. And, there’s something to be said for the wages earned by those in their respective departments at a larger publisher. So there’s time and money saved by having the work done all at once.

However, even with those differences, I found that we were able to do cheaper ARCs than a larger publisher. And I think the big difference is technology.

Before I delve deeper into the topic, I’d like to talk about in which genres we use ARCs. Read more »
