When readers discover that Lex Valentine doesn’t just spend her days writing, they’re often curious about what she actually does. The woman behind the pen name is a mother, an IT professional, and partner to a man who can still wear the same size jeans he wore in high school. (Doesn’t that just tick you off?) All of these and more are combined into the harried person who dons the pen name every night after work. Read more »

Designer Rosalind Hughes’s task is to create a perfect wedding, not to fall in love with groom, a South American aristocrat who holds all things American in contempt, especially American women. Her conservative Vermont background failed to prepare her for the environment of Colombian social conventions and the strength of tradition. She is mesmerized by black eyes and overwhelming sensuality, unaware that they belong to the bridegroom.

From the moment he sees Rosalind, Julio is a man in torment. He wants her, but she represents everything he abhors. How can he separate lust from love and remain faithful to his family’s traditions and the pledge made years ago by his father to join two powerful families?

EXCERPT:

Without warning, he pulled the car off the road into a dark green alcove of leafy shade trees and flipped off the ignition. His voice was rough, the muscle in his jaw twitching.

“I will take you to the hacienda when we understand each other, Querida. Now, I will explain to you again. You must not put yourself in my way so brazenly. I spend much time at the home of the Fernandez family as they have no man to oversee the plantation. Things being as they are, it is not proper that you and I should see each other except when there is someone to act as a chaperone.”

The archaic word screamed in Rosalind’s ear. Chaperone?

“You must be joking, Julio,” she snorted. “This isn’t the nineteenth century, and I am certainly past the age of requiring a chaperone. I’ve traveled to a foreign country alone, to work for a family I’ve never met. Don’t be absurd.”

She laughed out loud in spite of her anger.

His eyes blazed as he moved close to her, grasping her wrist tightly. “This is not a laughing matter, Señorita. You would do well to take me seriously. A woman such as you cannot expect to flaunt herself before a man and get away without consequences.”

His lips were white with tension as he pulled her closer and tightened his grip on her wrist. “Any other man would have taken what you have so generously offered. He would take you and keep you as his lover after his marriage.”

Rosalind jerked her hand but was unable to loosen his grip. Panic rose to choke her. “This conversation is ridiculous, and you’re making me very angry. Let me go this instant, and take me home.”

He was immovable. “I say you will sit here and listen to me until I make you understand the danger of our mutual lust.”

Lust? Something inside Rosalind’s head snapped. Before she realized what had happened, her free hand had darted out and slapped him full in the face.

“Stop it!”

She instantly regretted her action, but it was too late. Shock registered in his eyes, followed swiftly by a flare of something indefinable but clearly dangerous. In the pause that followed, arousal burst between them, suffusing her body with sweet weakness as blood rushed to her head. Familiar warmth raced through her and settled between her thighs. Her flesh swelled with longing for his to fill her.

Their gaze locked and held for a long moment, then he swore softly under his breath, wrenched her from her seat, and flung her across his body. The jet-black eyes burned as they searched her face for another moment, then his mouth descended swiftly, capturing hers.

His kiss was hot, rich, and demanding, urging her to allow him entry, forcing her to respond. Her anger died an instant death. She was unable to resist him as her body trembled beneath this sensual onslaught. As he tongued her lips apart and plundered the depths of her mouth, abandon overcame her, and her lips parted even more to allow him to explore the fullness he found there. His tongue caressed hers, and she met his desire with equal measure, her arm moving to clasp him around the neck, her fingers twined in his thick russet hair.

The kiss went on and on, as if his need could not be filled in a single moment, as if he had been parched with thirst and was at last quenching himself. His hands roamed her body without cease, igniting sparks everywhere his fingers touched.

Unaccustomed sensation whirled through her body as his hand found its way along her neck, across her shoulder, to her breast. Despite herself, her arms tightened around his neck, her fingers clutching the copper hair spilling over his collar. He groaned as she consumed his kiss and gave him hers in equal measure. She knew she should stop him, but her body wouldn’t obey her brain. Music inside her head drowned out everything else—–every rational thought, everything except the rapture he had created.

At last his mouth left hers, only to trace burning kisses across her face, her ears, and her neck while his hand stroked and squeezed her breast through the gauze of her blouse, his thumb rolling across her hardening nipple, eliciting soft cries from her lips.

“Rosalinda . . . Querida,” he moaned as he crushed her to him again, pinning her against his chest as his mouth caught hers in another deep, hungry kiss.

When he lifted his head, Rosalind tried to speak, but the only sound that came from her throat was an intake of breath as he pulled down the neck of her peasant blouse to reach inside. With a flick of his fingers, he opened her bra and thrust it away. His eyes feasted only for a moment, taking in the creamy whiteness tipped with pale rose, already beaded and awaiting his touch. Then his mouth was on her breast, sucking and rolling his tongue across the sensitive nipple that a pebbled even more tightly in his mouth.

Rosalind truly tried to speak, to resist, but she was drowning.

Following a disastrous love life, Molly Jenkins likes her life alone even though her best friend and her mother think differently. Cue her birthday gift of a cat; one male who won’t cheat on her!

Molly soon comes to rely on her new friend, so imagine her surprise when he reveals himself to be a Fae shape shifter, exiled from the Faewild and driven to find a human lover for bonding.

Shy of romance, Molly is slow to trust the new man in her life. But the sexual tension between them can’t be denied. Will Molly choose to bind Cade to her forever or send him back to the Fae world alone?

EXCERPT:

Gazing back at him, Molly knew she should feel frightened or at least very creeped out by what he’d told her. Why don’t I?

But she only felt a strange sort of excitement, building inside her.

After we make love, I will be bound to you forever.

Would he always find her beautiful? Always be faithful to her? Love her the way she wanted to be loved?

Although if Molly was truthful with herself, did she have enough experience to know how she wanted to be loved?

“How will it work?” she found herself asking, even though her stomach twisted nervously. “I mean… will you be a cat forever or a man forever, or can you shift freely?”

“I can shift whenever I choose to, and also whenever you command. I will be realmbound to you, Molly.” He stood then, one hand holding the tea towel in place. The cupcake design looked laughable against his firm, tanned flesh. He knelt before her. “It is a big step, my lovely one. Being realmbound to someone is no small matter. Perhaps I could give you a taste of what you would experience with me. The pleasure I could give you.”

With his free hand, he cupped her face, stroking the pad of his thumb tenderly over her jaw and up her cheek. His touch sent tiny rivers of sensations flowing inside her, rivers that all led to the same sensitive spot between her legs. When his thumb moved to her lips, caressing gently, her mouth seemed to open of its own accord. She heard herself sigh.

“More?” he whispered.

Helpless to do anything but nod, a gasp escaped her when his lips replaced his hand, and the sweet flavor of him filled her. He stroked his tongue over hers in a soft, sensual dance, and the rivers of sensations became tidal waves. They continued to flow to the same spot, and she ached for him to touch her there.

He nipped her bottom lip playfully, erotically, and then his kisses moved down, dotting over her chin, down to her neck, where the slide of his lips and tongue simultaneously tickled and aroused her. As she giggled, he captured her lips again, the kiss so tender that her heart bumped in her chest.

As he returned to kissing her neck, his hand lifted to cup her breast, his thumb finding the already firm point of her nipple and teasing it to hardness through the soft fabric of her boat neck t-shirt. She strained towards him, only wanting more, more, more-

He stopped.

Molly’s eyes snapped open. “What…”

“I cannot continue unless you want me to, my lovely one,” Cade told her, green eyes seeming to stare straight into her soul. “When that is, you can come to me. Until then…” He turned away, and in the blink of an eye her black cat sat before her, those same green eyes focused on her face.

Aching with need, every nerve thrumming, Molly covered her face with her hands, so confused and tired.

She needed her best friend.

But don’t forget, Lil isn’t what she seems.

“It doesn’t matter,” she said to herself out loud. “I need some answers, and I need them now.”

Before she did something she might really regret.

Excerpt:

“I had the most incredible dream a few nights ago,” Molly began as soon as Lil sat down next to her in the bar they’d chosen in Queens. They frequented the little place because of its quirky atmosphere and mismatched furniture; Victorian style lamps leaned against white-washed walls covered in modern art, and a telephone shaped like a pair of lips adorned the bar. Lazy blues music played in the background, just loud enough to be heard under conversation.

“Really?” Lil grinned into her cocktail, twirling the straw between her fingers. “Was it sexy? Did you win the lottery? Was it both?”

Sipping her cocktail, a glorious and very sugary combination of rum, cream liqueur and fruit juice, Molly laughed. “It was almost better than winning a boatload of cash. I had the most amazing dream that I woke up and a gorgeous man lay next to me. He started, well, touching me, I touched him – I’ve never been so turned on. But then, I woke up, without anything being resolved.”

Lil pouted. “No sex?”

“Nope. None. Zip. Just me and the cat.”

“Perhaps I should have put a man in that box instead,” Lil laughed, stirring her drink idly with her straw.

“No, of course not. I love Cade. He’s so affectionate, and so far – even though it’s only been a few days – more loyal than any man I’ve ever known,” Molly replied immediately. She gestured as she spoke and the silver bracelet on her wrist sparkled under the bar’s bright lighting. “He’s the best birthday gift I’ve ever had.”

“I’m glad.” Lil squeezed Molly’s hand. “You deserve it. I love your dress.”

“Thanks!” Molly stroked a hand down the skirt of the burgundy satin shift she wore. “I got it on sale.”

And so they passed the rest of the evening chatting about men, or the lack of them, Lil’s job as a domestic animal groomer and dog walker, and the latest fashions to grace the stores in New York. After making a date to go shopping, they said goodbye, and, tired after a day of writing followed by a few hours of drinking and talking, Molly rode the subway for three stops before wearily climbing the stairs to her apartment. When she turned the key in the door and found Cade sitting patiently, waiting for her, her heart flopped over in her chest. She closed the door, dropped her handbag and opened her arms to him. Behaving more like a dog than a cat, he hopped in and snuggled up.

As she Molly pressed her face into Cade’s fur, her nostrils caught the faintest woodsy scent. Just like in my dream. As she carried Cade to the couch, she shook off the feeling. Probably just her imagination, making her smell what she wanted!

Cade jumped neatly from her arms on to the couch, and Molly flopped down with him. “So tired, baby,” she told him as she leaned her head back. She would just close her eyes for a moment, and then get up, undress and go to bed.

Just a moment…

Excerpt:

The mare slowed to a walk and obligingly stopped under a broad-leafed tree. Rosalind swung out of the saddle. Taking the reins, she led the horse to the edge of the water where they both took a long, quenching drink. Mariposa snorted and shook the reins from Rosalind’s hand; then she leaned down and took great sucking gulps of cool water as Rosalind dipped a handkerchief to wipe the perspiration from her own face.

Black dust had stuck to the perspiration on her body. She wanted to wash it off before beginning the ride back to the plantation. She tried wiping her arms with the wet handkerchief, but she only succeeded in creating mud. She peered around the open countryside where she could see for a long distance. Satisfying herself that she was entirely alone, she slipped out of her shirt and washed her hands and arms in the shallow water, but her torso was still sticky with dusty perspiration.

From nowhere and without warning, a daring thought popped into her head——daring for a Vermont girl, anyway. She was hot and dirty, and the running water was calling her name. Why not have a quick dip before heading back? She was miles from anywhere with a clear panoramic view; she would be sure to see anyone approaching from three directions, so she felt secure from prying eyes. The thick copse of trees gave her a sense of privacy that was irresistible. She would wash off the sweat and grime while she cooled her body. Afterwards, refreshed, she would return to the hacienda and do a bit more work before dinner. Did she dare?

Yielding to an unprecedented and completely uncharacteristic impulse, she again scoured the countryside to ensure her solitude, then carefully shed her clothes and eased into the creek. The water was only waist deep, but she swam smoothly to the center and submerged. Her intent was to wet her body, wash off the dust, then get back into her clothes. But the water was refreshingly brisk at the top, cold at the bottom. She felt instantly invigorated.

She paddled about for a few moments, then lay back and floated downstream, eyes closed, enjoying the sensation of weightlessness. When she opened her eyes again, she looked around, saw no one, so she allowed herself to steal yet one more delicious moment in the creek.

Overhead, the sky was brilliant blue. Azul, the Spanish word came to her yet again without effort. This had to be the next best thing to Heaven, so different from the New England climate and topography she was accustomed to. A long sigh of utter contentment escaped her lips as she relaxed and laid back in the water.

She hadn’t realized how cramped her muscles had become from hunching over the sewing table. She often worked long hours in Madame’s shop, but here she also had the responsibility of directing the work of seamstresses whose work might not be as meticulous as her own, who did only what they were told and not a millimeter more. It was like running an assembly line, keeping everything moving at a steady clip, all the while monitoring accuracy and detail while unfamiliar with the language and customs.

This afternoon’s break was just the respite she needed before the hard work started. Although she was covered in goose bumps from the chill of the water, she was at the same time both tranquil and energized.

She rolled over, dipped her head into the water all the way to the bottom, then rose quickly. As she broke the surface again, she caught a glimpse of movement in the corner of her eye, but when she wiped the hair out of her eyes to look again, there was nothing there. She must have made a mistake. She swam back upstream to where she had entered the water.

Wading to the edge of the creek, she stood up in the shallow, knee-deep water, shook her hair, and squeezed out the excess water. The rivulets ran down her neck, traced a path across her bare shoulders, over rose-tipped breasts, down her belly, onto her naked thighs, now covered with tiny chill bumps. She was aware of the unexpected sensuality of the experience. Swimming naked was an alien occurrence, unheard of in her circle, and she found it intoxicating. All of her senses were heightened, and everything was somehow different.

She headed toward a grassy slope where she had left her clothes on a rock. Only now they weren’t lying on the rock. Surely she remembered where she had put them. Looking around quickly, she discovered her shirt and pants hung neatly on a tree, her boots standing upright next to them, her lacy bra and sheer panties, her only frivolous indulgence, lying atop the boots. She stood stock-still, frozen in shock and fear, confusion making her head fuzzy.

A rich, supple voice penetrated her stupor. A voice she knew only too well.

“Did you think there was something I had missed the first time, Señorita? Let me assure you, I saw everything very clearly, and now I have had the pleasure of a more leisurely viewing.”

She choked on surprise and disbelief.

Julio sat under another tree, his hat tilted forward to shade his eyes, booted feet crossed and resting on a rock. He wore an insolent smirk, acknowledging his advantage.
